Unveiled! The Cover For Marrowbones Number Two

Here it is, the cover for Marrowbones two. It took a full two days because I couldn't stop, this was serious fun to draw. I found a way to layer the digital colours the same way I do gouache and I wanted to keep exploring it. I'm currently drawing the last pin up for it now which just leaves a little bit of lettering and editing and finally the formatting which I'm hoping to have done over the weekend.

After this is done I'll be re-lettering issue one and putting together an issue zero, which is a small, free introduction.

AND! Please catch me on Jerzy Drozd's amazing podcast Comics Are Great! today at 12:30 EST. I will do my best to be civil and entertaining. Link! I'm very honored to be asked to be on this great show.

Marrowbones Two Cover Inks

Here's a look at the "inks" for the cover of issue 2 of Marrowbones"Oliver's Tomb" , it's all digital so the definition of inks is pretty loose here. It also changed a lot in the colouring, which is really cool. With digital I can keep drawing with colour. Love that.

I'm thinking now this will be out on Friday or early next week. I had found some cool new techniques I hadn't used before and got excited and it all spilled over into the next day. But I think the book will be better for it.

I also have an interview with Comic Are Great! This week, more on that soon.

Marrowbones Gets Closer

Revising, editing, recolouring but almost there! I think issue two is a step up from Marrowbones issue one as far as art and story go. After editing last night I started in on the cover. I'm going for a simple, expressive cover. I'm aiming for a German Expressionist, cinematic look. If you've seen films like Nosferatu and The Golem you'll know what I mean. German Expressionism gave us some of the most compelling approaches to visual story telling there is.

so, I think I'll have Marrowbones 2 out by next Wednesday, which is cool because it's the same day I'll be doing a interview with Comics Are Great! I'm really excited about that. It's such an amazing podcast, one of the best shows about comics there is.

After issue two there might be a bit of a break as I finish up Maddy Kettle and work on some contract work. My plan is to put together some shorter pieces, say, 10 page comics, when I can. I would charge a dollar for those, I think. This is shaping up to be an exciting year!

Marrowbones Two Sketches

Well, Oliver's tomb is almost done! I'm doing the last of the editing today. Which is tough because it's gorgeous out and there's a park next door and I have a bunch of comics and novels I want to read so there you go. But the story itself is almost complete. I still have to do a few more drawings for it and I'll be done. I'm hoping to launch it by next Wednesday. I'll keep you updated here!

About A Week To Marrowbones Two

Almost there! I finished up the colours on Oliver's Tomb, the new story, yesterday but discovered a new technique in Manga Studio which I've been playing with for hours. Part of the reasoning behind Marrowbones is that it gives me room to play and experiment, which I can't do as much with contract work. And also tell stories I can't otherwise.

Issue two of Marrowbones will be just over 30 pages and mostly contain a single story, Oliver's Tomb an include some incredible art by some of my favorite artists.

After issue two my schedule is getting increasingly hectic, so I'm thinking I'll release some much shorter Marrowbones books, 10 page books for a dollar whenever I can. In the end I'm hoping to have a 200 page collection of stories. Right now I'm up to about 80 pages. Getting there!

Playing With Marrowbones

I'm just playing with the colour here. I kind of like this look....I somehow fell asleep with my little boy this afternoon and lost a bunch of work time. But I think I needed the time for a bit of a breather. Organize my ideas and projects. Amazing how I need to plan months in advance. On top of Maddy Kettle and Marrowbones I have another project, a collaboration, I'm really excited about.

Inking Marrowbones

Here's a look at a partially finished Marrowbones panel, inked on Cintiq with Manga studio. Inkling on a Cintiq is a really fun experience, it's like drawing on glass. If you know anyone with a Cintiq give it a try, it's a great way to draw.

I'm about 4 pages away from finishing the inks on Marrowbones 2; Oliver's Tomb. I'm hoping to have this one up for sale within the next week and a half! So stay tuned...

Riggs The Studio Cat

The neighbor's cat, Riggs, has decided he loves hanging out in my studio so now I leave the door open so the elderly cat can come and go. I'm loving his surprise visits. I think he likes to watch me draw. Ghouls especially.

Nora In Crowsnest Cemetery, Marrowbones Issue 2

A little sneak peek at Marrowbones issue 2; Oliver's Tomb, which tells some back story before the Kitchen Lich story in issue 1. My approach right now is for the first three issues to focus on exploring the world and characters before issue 4 which will begin to tell a slightly broader narrative, although still with shorter stories. I want to keep Marrowbones as manageable shorter works I can do between larger comics and after time a greater story will emerge.

Marrowbones Forbidden Planet Review

Please go check out the wonderful Forbidden Planet International review of Marrowbones. So honored they did this write up!

"Marrowbones is short yet sweet, a quirky, creepy, cutesy thing to appeal to grown ups and kids alike."

Another Amazing TCAF

TCAF is my favorite comic book event. You can see the best artists and story tellers there. What a remarkable event. Above is me doing an "old lady" voice at the Saturday Morning Webtoons event this afternoon. That group can act! So much fun. There is no crowd as warm and engaged as a TCAF crowd.

And look what I got!! We just moved into a new townhouse here in Toronto and I filled the car up with art to fill the walls. I promised myself I would only buy prints and minicomics and this turned out to be a great idea, I got more treasures this year than ever before. It's still going on tomorrow! Go! It really is wonderful.
